Nauvoo House Association stock certificates, 1841.

This item consists of uncut sheets from the first and second printing of Nauvoo House Association stock receipts. The first series of $50 certificates was printed in black ink on white paper and includes a depiction of the Nauvoo House and an eagle. The notes in this item, numbered 419 and 420, are dated February 11, 1841, and signed by Secretary John Snider and President George Miller. The second series, also printed in black ink on white paper, has a more elaborate design. The $50 note shows a woman with an American flag, a shield, and an eagle, as well as a bust of George Washington. The $100 note depicts the Roman goddess Minerva with an angel and cherub, a steamboat, and a medallion head. This series was never issued or signed.

The Nauvoo House Association was incorporated in February 1841 for the purpose of constructing a public house in Nauvoo, Illinois. Capital was raised from sale of stock. Original committee members were George Miller, Lyman Wight, Peter Haws, and John Snyder. Construction was halted in March 1844, but was recommenced in April 1845, at which time George A.
